James Watson English III Mrs. Ortman-Peters 25 April 2017 Truth About The NBA’s ‘One-and-Done’ Rule Imagine being 19 years old and making millions of dollars doing what you love; this is just one opportunity that the NBA’s ‘one-and-done’ rule offers young, talented basketball players. The NBA has a rule in place for all of it’s upcoming stars. They must be at least 19 and one year separated from their last season of high school basketball. There a many different perspectives and opinions on the rule but there are a lot of benefits to young athletes the option to be in the NBA by such a young age and getting started on their professional career at only the age of 19. The rule simply offers many opportunities that many other sports leagues†¦show more content†¦He was called names such as â€Å"Hunga bunga meaning ape or monkey or Shakshuka meaning epithet from a cheap north African meal.† Often for Deng being called names and being picked on for his race was the least of his worri es. Many of these encounters with bullies resulted in the swinging fists in the schoolyard. Through all of the struggles Luol Deng had to fight through he kept his focus on basketball and being able to provide for himself in the near future. In 2003 Deng accepted an athletic scholarship to attend Duke University. In the 2003-04 NCAA March Madness Tournament Deng led the Duke Blue Devils enroute to a Final Four appearance. Unfortunately the Blue Devils did not go any further in the tournament but in the end Deng had achieved what he had been hungry for since moving to London; he had grabbed the attention NBA coaches and general managers. After only one year at Duke Deng declared for the NBA Draft. He was drafted 7th overall by the Phoenix Suns. (Michael Wallace, ESPN) Since being drafted in 2004 Deng has had plenty of success at the NBA level. Deng has played for four different NBA franchises, has been selected to two NBA All-Star Teams, and was selected to the 2005 All-Rookie First Team.
